The venue of press conference was surrounded by tropical green plants 葱翠绿植、精致鸟笼和时间齿轮交错交汇 The choice of color is deliberate: the green peacock is the only peacock in the world that truly originates in China, unlike the blue peacock whose roots can be traced to India and Sri Lanka. The decision to present the piece in Beijing also has its roots in history. Pierre Jaquet-Droz exported more than 600 pieces to China over a single decade in the early years of the business. The Jaquet Droz family ignited a passion for mechanical watches and European automatons in Emperor Qianlong and the Mandarins at the Imperial Court. King of the birds throughout ancient Chinese history and tradition, this rare species is said to symbolize virtue, propriety, honesty, benevolence and integrity. According to Chinese lore, the peacock’s head represents the sky, its eyes the sun, its wings the wind, its feet the Earth, its back the moon, and its tail the planets. A jaguar lounges behind the peacock, while an animated hummingbird flits at the foot of a flowing waterfall –also animated– in the background. The waterfall symbolizes life and tranquility, and provides the gushing backdrop to this thriving rainforest. The hummingbird, handcrafted by the brand’s artisan carvers and engravers, darts toward a bush full of resplendent orange birds of paradise. Certain animated elements of the scene are pressed into the dial. Hand-carved mother-of-pearl forms the base of the dial, which is hand-painted. Jaquet Droz New Tropical Bird Repeater This unusually complex automaton comes to life to the sound of a veritable Fine Watchmaking complication: the minute repeater. It can chime the hours, quarter-hours and minutes on demand via the cathedral gongs nestled inside the Jaquet Droz RMA89 movement. A push-piece activates this movement, which is fitted with an almost silent wheel regulator; the speed of the minute repeater is regulated by friction between small outer spring blades. Further innovations in this complication include new rack springs, an extended pause between the quarter-hours and minutes, and a major third in the quarter-hour chime. The movement is housed in a hand-engraved case whose lugs and middle are decorated with bespoke peacock feathers. Plus, the brand recently launched a new Lady 8 series as well as the much anticipated Jaquet Droz Signing Machine, a real feat of engineering. In addition to the press conference, Jaquet Droz prepared an art studio to show their distinguished guests the unique craft of micro painting.
